KAICAPI CEBACTΩ (for Caesar Augustus); laureate head of Augustus to r. / ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ ΤΕΤΡΑΡΧΟΥ; LIB (year 12 = 8/9 AD) between columns of the Augusteum of Paneas with stairs leading to it, dot in pediment. Hendin 1221. TJC 97. AJC II 244, 3. RPC 4941. Rare. Brown-green patina. About Extremely Fine / Extremely Fine.Son of Herod the Great by his fifth wife Cleopatra, Herod Philip (sometimes called Herod Philip II to distinguish him from a half-brother of the same name) was named Tetrarch of the northeast part of his father's kingdom, including Iturea, Trachontis, Batanea and Aurantis. Since only a minority of his subjects were Jews, his coins do not reflect the usual taboo on "graven images" and feature portraits of the Roman Emperor and Empress, and even (rarely) of himself.
